National Chocolate Cake Day 2023

Friday, January 27th, 2023

It’s always nice to celebrate a day that involves chocolate cake! This year we tried out a couple new recipes from one of Laura’s favorite baking sites (Sally’s Baking Addiction) and had Chocolate Zucchini Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese frosting. The cake is nice and moist, and you’d never guess there’s a vegetable hiding […]

National Pie Day 2023

Monday, January 23rd, 2023

Laura used some apples we had in the fridge and made us Apple Pie to celebrate the day. We had it warm with Häagen-Dazs Vanilla ice cream.

It was also National Rhubarb Pie Day but let’s not get Crazy?

El Segundo Home Town Fair 2022

Saturday, May 7th, 2022

After a two year hiatus because of Covid-19, the El Segundo Hometown Fair was held again, complete with the bake-off competition! Laura had the recipe for Everything Bagel Pull-Apart Bread saved (she had planned to enter this in the canceled 2020 contest), and found a Strawberry Cake recipe on one of her favorite baking […]

National Kahlua Day!

Sunday, February 27th, 2022

Our word game Cody Cross alerted us that Feb 27 is National Kahlua Day. Luckily, we had some in the cabinet, and celebrated with Kahlua in coffee topped with whipped cream. Homemade chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies on the side was a bonus.

National Chocolate Cake Day

Thursday, January 27th, 2022

We celebrated National Chocolate Cake Day by trying out a new recipe (thanks Rebecca!) for chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream - very chocolate-y and delicious. We used Shawna’s Mom’s cake stand (thanks Shawna!) for it - this is the first time it’s had an actual cake in it!

National Pie Day 2022

Sunday, January 23rd, 2022

We celebrated National Pie Day with Shepherd’s Pie for lunch while watching the Rams defeat the Buccaneers in a NFL playoff game (what a game!)

National Cookie Day 2021

Saturday, December 4th, 2021

Laura made peanut butter cookies for us to enjoy, using her Aunt Shirley’s recipe from the “Swedes in the Kitchen” family cookbook that her cousin Heather put together several years ago.
The cookies are delicious and have a very delicate crunch. As you can see, this is a well-used cookbook - we also use Aunt Shirley’s […]

Thanksgiving 2021

Thursday, November 25th, 2021

We enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving meal, and then enjoyed leftovers for a full week. The 14 lb turkey barely fit in the oven! Besides the turkey we had the classic green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and homemade cranberry sauce and rolls. The gravy was made in true family tradition while enjoying […]

National Pigs in a Blanket Day

Saturday, April 24th, 2021

We decided to use our sourdough starter to make dough to celebrate National Pigs in a Blanket Day. Laura mixed it up the day before, and tucked it into the fridge for a slow rise. Making the piggies was super easy with most of the work done ahead. We did a regular […]

Pi Day 2021

Sunday, March 14th, 2021

We celebrated Pi Day with homemade sourdough crust Pi themed pizza pie with garden fresh tomatoes and rings of onion and sliced olives. The toppings were all round to celebrate Pi. Unfortunately when the cheese melted, the Pi related handiwork also melted… it was still delicious though.

Zucchini Bread

Sunday, October 18th, 2020

Helen shared a ginormous zucchini from her garden (Thank you Helen!)… it weighed in at over 4-1/2 pounds!
Such a bounty screamed for zucchini bread!
Even after having some zuke for lunch and grating 2 cups for zucchini bread, there’s still a lot left to enjoy.

Sourdough Pizza

Wednesday, October 14th, 2020

We were gifted some sourdough starter (Thanks Eliza!) and after feeding it for a few weeks it was time to try baking something. With basil, a few small peppers, and Roma tomatoes growing in the garden, pizza seemed like a perfect choice.
The flour, salt, sugar, and water get added to the starter and […]

National White Chocolate Day!

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2020

To celebrate National White Chocolate Day, we enjoyed Oatmeal Everything Cookies.

Used Mom’s traditional oatmeal cookie recipe, and added both semisweet and white chocolate chips.

Can’t decide between crunchy or soft cookies? Bake one tray a little longer than the other and enjoy both!
